QUEENS COLLEGE LONDON
This is an opportunity to join one of the most high-achieving and forward-looking independent schools in London. We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified and inspirational classroom practitioner as teacher of Mathematics in a supportive and thriving department at this over-subscribed, academically selective school for girls aged 11 to 18. The successful candidate will work closely with the department and the Head of Mathematics to develop the teaching of Mathematics at Queen’s College.
The Mathematics department currently comprises eight well-qualified mathematicians and prides itself in helping every pupil to achieve their potential. The Maths staff share an office and the approach of the department is collaborative. All members of the department are expected to teach throughout the College, including at A-level.
Year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability groups whilst pupils in Year 8-11 are set according to ability with all sets following the same course and sitting the same assessment tests; lower sets benefit from a slightly slower pace of working and usually smaller groups. There are normally four sets in each year group. Consistently achieving very good results, we follow the Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics specification, and most pupils are entered at higher level with some also opting to take the AQA Level 2 Further Maths qualification. A significant number of our pupils progress into the Sixth Form to study A-level Mathematics (also Edexcel) with several opting to study Further Mathematics.
The department organises various trips to lectures and conferences in central London including the Maths Inspiration Lectures. Pupils are also offered the opportunity to participate in the UKMT Maths Challenges. Students routinely gain certificates in these challenges and a select few do well enough to qualify for the follow-up rounds.
This is a full-time, permanent position starting in September 2024. It offers a competitive salary, dependent on qualifications, skills and experience, plus healthcare insurance (taxable benefit), free lunches in the Dining Room during term time and a wellness allowance.
As the first school in the UK to grant academic qualifications to women, Queen’s has a proud history of educating some of this country’s most pioneering women. This appointment represents an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to lead our Mathematics department and ensure we retain our position at the forefront of girls’ education.
