Job Title: Prep Gym and Dance Specialist and PE Teaching Assistant

Job Purpose: To lead on gymnastics and dance at the Girls’ Preparatory School.

To work with and support the PE Department at Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School, and to promote the highest standards of teaching, learning and pastoral care within the Department.

Primary Reporting Line: Head of the Girls’ Preparatory School

Secondary Reporting line: Head of Sport at the Girls’ Preparatory School

Start Date: January 2024

Tenure: Permanent, full-time hours, part-time weeks (36 weeks per year)

Monday to Thursday; 33 hours per week

Salary: Surbiton High School Pay Scale

£27,385 – £34,548 FTE; £19,108 – £24,106 Part-time actual salary

Prep Gym & Dance Specialist Key Responsibilities:

To lead on planning, assessment and teaching for the gymnastics and dance provision at the Girls’ Preparatory School.
To lead on planning, organising, and running of the co-curricular gymnastics programme at the Girls’ Preparatory School.
To nurture and build confidence in pupils who don’t feel competent or motivated in gymnastics and dance.
To support and mentor pupils who train at squad club level externally.
To foster good working relationships with external gymnastics coaches in order to ensure that pupils who train externally can train and compete both at club level and for the School.
To support the Drama Team during school productions, leading on choreography and movement for Girls’ Prep events such as dance and drama showcases.
To enable and encourage pupils to take part in gymnastics co-curricular clubs.
To work closely with the elite and advanced squad level gymnastics to compete regionally and nationally.
To organise workshops and sessions from reputable external teachers to keep the gymnastics and dance programmes exciting and pupils motivated and challenged.
To be responsible for taking specialist gymnastics PE lessons, and to guide and support other staff members within the department when teaching or assisting in gymnastics and dance lessons.
To be the main port of call for any gymnastics and dance queries for staff, pupils and parents.
To build meaningful and supportive relationships with parents, through precise, honest and consistent communication.
To be in regular contact with the Head of Gymnastics at the Senior School, to ensure parity and develop purposeful goals and outcomes in unison.

PE Teaching Assistant Key Responsibilities:

Coaching

To assist with the teaching of PE in lessons
To accompany staff to matches and tournaments as required
To be responsible for coaching pupils as appropriate

Academic

To foster interest and enthusiasm for learning amongst the pupils as well as encouraging a general spirit of intellectual enquiry and rigour
To assist teachers with the preparation and carrying out of all activities, as required
To lead group activities within lessons, driving pupil progress and outcome
To contribute to assessment reporting statements through observation
To work, on occasion, with individual pupils who may need individual support

Pastoral

To know the pupils throughout the School, but especially those in the classes taught, for whom you are a point of contact on matters of the children’s wellbeing
To participate in the School’s programme for the personal and social development of the pupils
To promote the development and progress in the social, academic and co-curricular spheres of all the pupils in your care, under the guidance of the Head
To supervise duties, including: early morning duty, morning playtime, lunch, after school duty and First Aid
To assist with co-curricular clubs (minimum of 3 afternoons a week)

Administration and Equipment

To record pupils’ performance
To confirm transport
To maintain the Sports’ notice boards and displays
To set out and clear away equipment
To maintain equipment
To keep an inventory of equipment

General

To uphold and enforce School rules and to work in cooperation with colleagues to promote the high standards of behaviour and concern for others that are part of the School’s tradition and purpose
To attend meetings, curriculum sessions, INSET sessions and other such meetings as may be necessary for the discharge of teaching support, pastoral or other duties
To undertake supervisory duties as requested
To be fully aware of and to implement the School’s policy on Health and Safety
To liaise with colleagues over all matters relating to children’s progress and wellbeing as appropriate
To develop and maintain good working relationships with children, staff and parents
To be aware of the need for professional development
To participate in the School’s appraisal system
To be available to offer support at evening activities such as school productions / parent evenings, as reasonably requested by the Head
To undertake any other duties which the Principal may reasonably request
To maintain a safe teaching environment at all times
